Quarter Square Triangles (QSTs) (Hour Glass Blocks)
Traditional method:
Cut (2) 4 ¼” squares of main fabric and (2) 4 ¼” squares of background fabric.
Place 1 of each right sides together (RST) and cut twice from corner to corner like an X. *Sew along the short side with main fabric on top. Press towards main fabric. Remove dog ears. Join hour glass halves together to make 4 Hour Glass/QSTs units.
Essential Triangle Tool method:
Cut a 2” strip from Main Fabric and Background fabric. Place right sides together.
Use the green 2” line for a 3” finished triangle unit. Position the line at the bottom of the strip (on the fabric, not off) and cut along both sides of the triangle. Pivot the ruler with the 2” line on the top of the strip (line on the fabric) and continue to cut 4 triangles. Refer to * above and continue to make 4 hour glass units. Trim to 3 ½”
Half Square Triangles (HSTs)
Traditional Method:
Cut two 3 7/8” squares of Main and Background fabrics.
Draw a line diagonally down the center corner to corner. Sew ¼” on each side of the drawn line. Cut on the drawn line. Press. Trim to 3 ½” Makes 4 HSTs
OR
Cut two 3 7/8” squares of Main and Background fabrics. Cut in half on the diagonal corner to corner. Press to the main fabric and trim to 3 ½”
Essential Triangle Tool Method:
Cut a 3 ½” strip of main fabric and background fabric. Place right sides together. Square off the end of the strip set. Use the 5th red line for 3” finished HSTs. Pivot the ruler and continue to cut 4 HSTs. Sew, press and trim to 3 ½”.
