Show and Tell

Judy and Brenda  showed a Bonnie Hunter Mystery Quilts.  Called Roll, Roll Cotton Boll.   They started in November and are done.

RSVP Quilt – Lawana made the blocks and Judy assembled.  They used baby clothes that had been cut up.

 

Brenda showed a small item that she made to hang over the arm of her chair.

Judy showed four blocks that she made at a Bonnie Hunter workshop at Pigeon Forge.  It combines two blocks, Jacobs Ladder and a star block

Judy also showed some hand pieced Apple Core pieces. Cindy Blackburg makes the stamps for the  pattern.

Ebba showed what she learned from a class called rediscovered log cabin. 

She also showed her results from a tube quilt class.  Also 9 patch shuffle.  It was really pretty. 

Linda showed Marty Michelle Jamestown Sampler.

Terry showed her twisted Barjello quilt and her shoefly quilt tops. Watana will be quilting them.

Julia showed a number of items from her family quilting retreat.

Using 10 inch blocks, 4 darks and one light.  Fold light in half, wrong sides together. 

Business

Treasurey report .  Two deposits dues and cash on hand.  $300.00 from Exchange club and another $4020.32 and $1800 in the education fund.

Minutes were read and amended.

Ballots were then passed out for the various Karen Combs workshops.  Discussion on various workshops. Overwhelming majority for Combing through your scraps.

Charity quilts, if you are on the committee maybe you could spear head a quilt so it would be ready to go when we get to that part of the meeting.

Discussion on reconsidering whether to get Bonnie Hunter.  We voted to reconsider and possibly get someone else.  The committee will research and bring a recommendation.

The relay for life quilt can no longer be hung in the store.  Tickets only from associates.  Next year Watana suggest we produce a relay for life quilt for Lowndes County or Columbus. 

Raffle quilt will be worked on this afternoon.

Pilgrimage Lauren brought brochures.  Brenda Is donating a top. 

  It will go to the next Habitat home.  See Judy about quilting during the pilgrimage or artisan Saturday.

Challenge committee – need binding on two blocks for next week. 

There will be viewers choice next year with a monetary reward.  First, Second, and Third will be awarded by secret ballot vote by members.  Cost is $6, to cover the costs of batting and backing.  Viewers choice is $40, First is $40, Second is $30, Third is $20.  Discussion on comments.  The theme is birds at home.  Deadline is July 16.  If you are late you are not eligible to win the prize money.  You may add as many colors as you would like.  Prewashed 100% cotton fabric.  15 inch unfinished.  We are going to use 14 inch finished so be sure your design fits in that space. 

Delta mystery next update will be done.  Request was made that speedy folks avoid posting pictures or showing their tops till the final month to avoid spoiling the mystery for those who are not able to work ahead.

Proposal that May workshop be held April 30.  Passed.  No workshop first week of May due to Market Street Festival.

Show and Tell

Lawana showed her reversible circle quilt.

Sharon Lofton showed several quilts.  The first was a bargello.   

Next she showed a trip around the world. 

Then she showed an adaption of a pattern she saw in a quilt magazine. 

Finally she showed a fussy cut wild animal quilt. 

The exchange club quilt was shown too.

and the back -- it is hard to see the quilting in the photo, but Watana did a great job.

The extra blocks were put in a strip on the back of the quilt. 

Then Annette showed some Karen Combs graduated fabric she bought at Heritage quilt shop in Tupelo.  It is also available at Karencombs.com.  Everyone needs to visit the website and look at the classes that are available.  We will vote on what we would like to take at our next meeting.

She then showed her quilt as you go string quilt.  She made it with the left overs from the sister’s quilts.

Watana showed her Fighting Day and Night quilt that she made for the Lamar County Relay for Life Rally.   Contact her if you would like tickets.  They are $1 a chance.

Mary Ann presented Sharon with a hand painted and quilted wall quilt of our emblem.  Good Job Mary Ann and THANK YOU Sharon for all your hard work.

Business

Minutes were read.  Accepted.

Treasury report  390.00 dues paid $190.00 expenses giving a balance of $4,113.74.  $1880 is designated for education.

If you dues are not paid they need to be paid at this time. 

We have 28 paid members at the time.  Report was unanimously accepted.

Sandi had the program. She showed a big bag she had made.  She said she would have the pattern next time.  You can line it and add pockets in the lining.

She also demo’d a ruler she used to work on the mystery quilt.

Karen Combs workshop will be October 15, we will not open to other guilds.  We have decided to try to book Bonnie Hunter in 2013. 

MUW wants us to teach beginning quilting MUW on Monday-Thursday and Saturday morning Sept. 19 – Oct 31.  Need answer by Feb 28.  Contact 662-327-0043 Cathy Howell.     Annette made the motion that we do not take it as a guild and make it for individual work only.

Aliceville Middle School was asking for us to teach grades 7-8…but they dropped that from the program.

MUW theatre group is coming after lunch to observe us.  They would like to have some quilts to display Feb 24-27. They are putting on a show about quilters.  

Old Business:  T-shirts, when Joanne gets back we will check in with her.

Quilt in a day has a Triangle square up ruler.  Mississippi is the promotional code. sp;

Nominating Committee:

Challenge Quilt Committee: Discussion on the floor of the suggestions Julia made in her email.  She suggested nominating a new committee and continuing on as we have or  we could make a quilt to donate to the arts center or we could take another suggestion from the floor.  Contest could have categories.  

Committee was formed Annette Pennington, Jennifer Haggard, Carol James, Linda Baines and Sharon Loften volunteered. 

Pilgrimage:  Brenda Crownover brought forms with schedules.  Please fill out and let us know when you can come quilt.

Internet:  Do we want to have a wiki?

Raffle quilt:  We are almost done with the blocks and we will try to finish the blocks this afternoon.

February 2011 Workshop day

Hey all,

Possum town quilters had a workshop day and I thought I would give a short report.  I could not stay as I had help for moving a table...and you know how that goes, you have to take that help when it is available.

One of our projects is to organize the fabric donated to our group.  It had been stored in bags in a storage room, and some in the bottom of another cabinet.   Our group purchased one of those portable storage closets for our fabric and first we just got it in there...and it looked like this.
So using a folding technique that one of our members knew...

We added painters tape with notes on how many yards for the larger pieces.  Painters tape does not leave residue behind.



















Other members worked on the quilt for the Exchange club and the one for Wal-Mart to raffle for the Relay for Life fund drive.  Some Basket of Flower blocks that we decided would be better for wall hanging were worked on too.  I missed the end so I did not see the results of the days work.

January 2011 Meeting

Meeting Minutes

Visitors  present:  Tanya Stewart,  Regina DeMint, Twyla Summerford,  Jennifer Haggard,  Pattie Straton, and Cindy Waites.  Thanks for joining us.

Show and Tell

Annette  showed a small tube quilt made from some curtain material. She wanted to try out the technique.
She then read us a poem she wrote about our mystery quilt.  It was very funny.

Pattie Straton showed two quilts tops she had made.

Challenge quilt was showed.  Just lack putting the binding on.  That was done in the afternoon.

 Terry showed a quilt she called "Dreaming Under the Stars"  made for her son.  Sharon quilted it for her.

Judy showed quilts made from Pidgon Forge fabrics with the category memories.  Julia and Judy are both competing.

Judy showed her black and tan quilt blocks quilt top.

Julia was a finalist, in the new quilts from an old favorite.

Sharon Lofton showed a quilt as you go string quilt.

 

This is a two sided quilt.

Christine demo’ed how to do a scrap quilt.

 Judy showed her completed UFO from last year and showed her goal piece for this year.

Business

Dues are due today

Minutes were read. 

RAC Quilt show in August.  So plan to do some smaller projects to show and sell.  Fiber art is acceptable.  We have to have 75% of what is shown for sale.

Be sure to see the show upstairs.  Lisa Stamps made the ones on display.  They are mostly from Gordo. 

Karen Combs is coming October 15.  Would the guild have enough to book Bonnie Hunter  in 2013. 

Deborah who repaired sewing machines out of the pawn shop is no longer picking up machines there.

Committee reports

Nominating Committee: No Report .  Sign up sheet for this year’s committees will be put out at the end of the meeting.  Please sign up to serve on a committee. 

Raffle quilt:  We will work on this this afternoon.

Challenge Quilt Committee:   No report

Charity quilts: We are working this afternoon.  If you have not brought your exchange club block back please bring it at the workshop as we need it.  If you cannot do it by then please let one of the committee members know.  If you are working on Charity Quilts for Parchment inmates, get them to Mary Ann Abrams.

Pilgrimage:  We are welcome.  It is time for us to decide who is available for quilting.   We can hang a quilt to raffle off. 

Treasurer:  $3823.74 total with  $1880 of that in the educational funds.

Internet:  We will no longer be using the Yahoo! Group site.  We will use email and the blog to stay in touch.  Therefore it is very important that everyone add the members email addresses to their email address book.  Otherwise when you are sent an email addressed to the group, it will, most likely go to the spam folder.  We have signed up for a you-tube channel.  That is where our video’s will be posted.  (Thanks Dad for the new toy!)

Historical committee:  We are looking for a replacement for Sharon Hedrick as she is moving to Germany.

Majorie Wants us to do the Hunter star with a light cream or beige with a dark fall color or a light and dark of the same color  also with fall colors using tone on tones.

Linda wants us to do a 12.5 inch block with a star of your choice and a color of your choice.  The background can be any color.  Your choice on pattern. 

Christine demo’ed a scrap quilt that she read about in the new Quiltmaker magazine.

Judy demonstrated how to strip cut fabric without “v’s”
