June 10, 2017 Guild Meeting

We began by silencing our cell phones and welcoming our new member, Marilyn H. 

OLD BUSINESS:
Treasurers report approved as read and printed;  Secretary's minutes approved as published to the blog.
Committee updates given.  Judy, Julia, and Lauren are considering options for the next raffle quilt.
Working on the heart quilt;  need to cut binding for string quilt

Contact Naomi about going on a day trip to Florence, AL to visit the shop  Alabama Chanin.  This shoppe does hand embellishment of clothing.  Program begins at 10 am, so the group will leave Columbus at 6:30 am.

NEW BUSINESS

Joyce Knight from the Christian Women's Life Program in Batesville MS contacted Tonya. 
October 7 an Arts and Crafts booth will be set up in Booneville, MS.  Ms. Knight offered guild members the opportunity to place items in the booth.  Contact Tonya for more information.

lunch on July 8---PTQ will provide a meat and cheese tray.  Julia will bring bread, Donna condiments, and Patti dessert.  Please feel free to volunteer to bring chips, pickles, or other items to add to our "getting to know you better" lunch time. 

July 8 program will be presented by our special guest Regina Breland. 
She will educate us about the MS Barn Quilt Trail.  This will set the tone for our special class, SATURDAY, July 29 with Rita teaching us how to paint our own barn quilt.

July 17 - 22   MQA National Teacher--Barbara Cline will be in Biloxi, Mon., July 17;
Hattiesburg, Tue., July18;  Jackson, Wed., July 19;  Starkville, Thur., July 20;  Oxford, Fri., July 21; and Corinth, Sat., July 22. 
All MQA members should have received their information and registration sheets June 8 - 10.

SATURDAY, July 29 at Flint Hill UM Church, Caledonia-- Rita will be teaching us how to paint our own barn quilt.  Supply fee required.

Today guild members began the list for participating in the Secret Santa portion of the Christmas social to be held Saturday, Dec. 2.  Email Tonya to be added so you can participate in the
Secret Santa fun.
Reminder to begin your handmade Christmas gift for the Left/Right game.

Guild purchased Door Prizes to be used as needed.

Not long until time to nominate officers for 2018.  Will you serve?

MQA Fall Gathering will be in Hernando Friday evening October 13 and Saturday, October 14.



Naomi's program  taught  us about "crumb squares"  She shared her organization of squares 1.5 to 3 inches.  She explained the 'leaders and enders' concept used to make these small blocks or to sew small crumb scraps together to "make fabric".  Once the sewn together crumb fabric pieces are large enough to cut the shape she needs, she cuts the shapes and uses them in scrappy quilt projects.

May 13, 2017 Meeting


     Minutes for April meeting approved as published.  Treasurers report read and approved.

      Announcements: 
-MQA June Gathering is on Friday evening, June 2nd and Saturday, June 3rd.
-Birmingham Quilt show will be on June 16-17th.
-Naomi’s RED plastic  PTQ membership folder has been missing since the March meeting.  The membership folder booklet is red and has PTQ membership information on the front printed in black.  Naomi Perry is also printed on the front.  Please check your meeting tote bags, and let's get her booklet returned.
-CC misplaced her challenge kit (#25) so if you will look for it in your meeting bags and find it,  please let CC know.

    A day trip was planned for May 27th for all who want to go it will be up to Senatobia to visit        Cotton Treasures, then to Oxford’s Sit-N-Rock, and a stop at Heirlooms Forever in Tupelo before coming home. Please contact Naomi if you would like to participate in this fun day trip.

      Snippet of the month:  Quick Quilt Recipes or Time Saving Tips and Tricks--
--Judy shared the "Leaders and Enders" concept.  She places squares for a 4-patch under her needled as a "leader" for string piecing and as an "ender" when the string is completed.  These patches are part of an ongoing set of quilt blocks that will create a quilt.


--Terri H and Lauren shared fabric starching techniques for making quilt borders lie flat before sewing them to the quilt.
Next month’s snippet will be sharing your favorite quilt book.  Go to your bookcase and pull out your favorite quilting book to share with the guild.   Your book might become someone else's new favorite!


       If anyone wants to participate in the challenge block quilt  -MS themed blocks-- and hasn’t purchased a kit yet, please contact Karen A. to get your kit.

        Anna Ushery contacted Tonya and would like to have some quilt tops quilted. If you are interested in quilting the tops for her, please feel free to contact her at: (662) 240-9900. And let Tonya know if you plan to contact her as well.

     Ernest Sanders contacted Tonya about fabric his wife (who passed away) left. He was trying to find someone who would like it…if interested please feel free to contact him at (662)494-4669.  Please let Tonya know if you will be contacting him.

   We had a wonderful meeting with an awesome presentation by Karen on repairing of old quilts.
