May 11 Meeting Minutes

Vice President, Patti, called our meeting to order at 9:30 a.m. due to the absence of our President.  Patti welcomed all including our visitors, Vicky and Charity, Eloise and Marcus (Diane's mother-in-law from Meridian and her husband, who dropped by to see some quilts that had been done). There were 19 members in attendance.

May birthdays are: 8-Christine; 9-Linda B; 10-Lauren Hutchins; 13-Tonya; 14-Bettye B.

Old Business:

A reminder was given that our challenge blocks will be due June 4.  Several blocks were turned in today and are shown  below in our "show and tell" pictures.

With new members joining, several are wanting our membership pictures and short bios updated so all will get to know each other.  Joanne and Diane hope to work on that soon.  Please be rewriting your bio and attach a picture and send to Diane.

Members were also reminded to take another look at the old books and magazines before they were given away.

New Business:

Donna and Patti presented an idea to the club about having several groups in guild to participate in a charm swap. There was a lot of interest, so they are going to get the instructions together, dates, quantity and info on material and get out to those who want to do it.

Committee Reports:  Inventory was in good shape. We have 5 quilts completely finished and at least 4 more partially done.

Treasurer's report was given by Tonya and approved by all.  Patti brought before the club that Diane had bought a coffee pot and all supplies for the guild. It was voted that guild should reimburse her and charge 25 cents per cup of coffee. The money would go into the meal fund.

Tonya mentioned she had sent out new list with all members and their contact information.  If any changes or questions, please give her a call.

Annette read a cute article on " Battle of the Batting" dated in 1997.  Thanks, Annette, we enjoyed it!

Carol gave us a demo on how to do a "project saver", where you roll up your project in this material/mailing tube, so you can keep all your material pieces together. Great way to keep it organized.  Thanks, Carol.

Wantana mentioned to guild how they so appreciated all the comforting words, cards, calls, etc., for her daughter's loss.

Our next meeting will be our Sit and Sew meeting on Saturday, May 25 at 9:30 at the RAC. Hope to see you all there.

Lunch was pizza provided by the guild and a "Happy Mother's Day" cake by Diane.

Lunch will be provided by Carol, Rita and need one more person for June 8.

April  Minutes

April 13, 2013

President Terry called our meeting to order at 9:30 a.m. and welcomed all. 

We had 21 members present and no guests.

Old Business:

The RAC is downsizing the center's storage area, so guild is consolidating our areas to fewer shelves.  After membership looked over old books and magazines, we voted to give remainder to Columbus Library to shelve or sell at their event, "Friends of the Library".

Our treasurer, Tonya, gave her report, which was approved as read.
A reminder was given to those who had not paid their yearly dues of $15.00 that by end of April you would be dropped from membership if not paid up.

The Accu Go cutter was repaired for $52.00. Membership voted to pay this.

Our quilting at the Columbus Pilgrimage was a great success this year. We got our quilt half done with hand quilting.  We quilted at 7 houses with 9 members participating.  Thanks to all who quilted and shared their talent with all our visitors who stopped at our table. I, myself, was given a tour of , Shadow Lawn, the home where I quilted.

The Columbus Cultural Heritage Foundation gifted our guild a donation for participating at the Artesian Alley on Saturday.  What a wonderful surprise!

We are excited to be nominating Marjorie for MQA Outstanding Quilter. Marjorie has done some beautiful quilts in her 90 years. We are so proud of her and her accomplishments. We are glad she is a member of our guild.

New Business:

Lauren gave out information for our PTQ 2013 Challenge. Each packet contained a swatch of "challenge" fabric for  the cost of $5.00.  Exact colors are to be used that are in the swatch. You may use as many colors as you want, just so they match exactly. Your block may be pieced or appliqued or a combination of the two. There is no specific theme for the block. Different sizes listed in your packet can be given. You may do more than one. Block(s) are due no later than 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 4, 2013.  If you have questions concerning this challenge, contact one of the committee members (Lauren, Judy, Watana or CC).

The Common Thread will be coming out early May. It will have classes listed, suggestions on where to stay, and meal choices. Be on the lookout and plan to attend!

Our 2013 Ultimate Guild  challenge quilts were displayed this year during our Pilgrimage at the Welcome Center and were to be voted on for viewer's choice. Those in attendance at our meeting walked over to see them all displayed. We had lots of positive comments. We even made the daily paper with a great article.  Hope you all got to see it.

Judy gave a demo on how to make a 4" AQS hanging sleeve for a quilt. Thanks Judy.

Our meal was provided by Carol, CC and Shirley. Thanks lady for a great, delicious meal.

May meal will be provided by the guild with pizza.  Diane will provide a decorated cake. Hope to see you all.

Notes for Saturday April 13 Meeting

Hey all,

Boy there is a lot going on to cover before our meeting on Saturday!!  I will try to organize my thoughts on this, but I am also thinking about the upcoming school week and there is a lot to do there too.

First off, we need to get our committees going.  Here is the list of who signed up for what, so call each other and get thoughts together so our time will be real productive.

So here is our list of who signed up for what...if you are not on it and want to serve, we will find a place for you!  If your committee does not have a chair, please choose one from the ones on the committee.

Also at our meeting we will need to take a walk over to the visitors center to rank the Tennessee Williams quilts.  We are going to ask you to rate them from 1 to 10.  The Starkville guild will rate them also.  That way we will have more votes and hopefully a good group for the show.

Some of the sleeves were not quite right, so Judy is going to do a demo on how to do a sleeve.  This is really timely, as with our show coming up, we want our things to hang and show nicely.  Really things smaller than 15 to 20 inches should probably have fast finish triangles like the AAQI quilts do.  There is a good explanation of how to do those on their site.

I got an email saying the RAC had not had a chance to do their big clean out, (the lady in charge was unable to make it) but they really want us to limit the amount of things we keep up there.  On that note, we need to go through the books and take what you want home, the remainder can be donated to the public library or some other organization.  We were told this at the last sit and sew, so those there had a head start, but there were some more to go through, I think!

Also spoke the the CAC about having a week to work on Charity quilts or other projects in the summer.  The only one available is the first week of June.  So everyone check their calendars and see if that would be something we would be interested in.  Also, they were wondering if we would be willing to teach older kids how to make a simple block on one of the days...

So bring your 30's print (or one that would work with 30's bright, cheerful, small print)  and your white or off white fabric to the meeting for our after lunch project!!  See you there on Saturday!

Saturday Workshop 3/23

Hey all,

Saturday is workshop day, so bring a project to work on and come on down to the RAC for a sit and sew.  I am not sure whether Mary Anne will be bringing the wedding ring quilt or not, so bring a project.  If you have your Ultimate guild challenge, email Judy with your title of the quilt.  Don't forget that it cannot be the title of the play/novel/short story.  We have to honor those copyright laws!

So those participating, here is your list....
1)  Put on a sleeve, directions are in your packet.
2)  Fill out the paper work and don't forget to sign it!!
3)  Be prepared to have a head and shoulder picture made.
4)  Needle, thread and thimble to put label on.

I will probably not bring a project as I will be doing the photos of the quilts and checking the paper work.  See you there!!

March 2013 Show and Tell

Hey all,

We had a smaller group with the change of date and beginning of Spring break.  Don't forget that the next meeting is our workshop day on March 23.  Tennessee Williams challenge is due.  Even if you have shown the quilt, bring it, the paperwork, and be ready to take a head and shoulder's picture.
