Possum Town Quilters December 2011 Meeting and Minutes

First we would like to thank Victoria Meehan for opening her home to us. We had a wonderful time.

Julia called the meeting to order.

Gwen Edie visited, Betty Bridges had to miss due to a commitment in Louisiana.

Show and Tell

Julia found this pretty top in an antique store. Love those antique fabrics.

Watana showed a t-shirt quilt commissioned by Edna McGill.

Barbara showed a table runner she made with her Christmas blocks.

Barbara also showed a tshirt quilt she made for the children's director at East End.

Brenda Crownover gave a bag of fat quarters to Victoria for hosting the Christmas Party. Don't you love her reaction?

Business
Opportunity Quilt was won by Carla Formel's sister-in-law. She recieved it in the mail on Thursday and loves it. Carla's husband bought some tickets and wanted to do something nice for his sister, who is a very giving person, so he put her name on a number of tickets. They were talking about how neat it would be if she won the quilt and then Judy called with the news she had won it.

Sandi shared that DeWayne Hayes is going to be hosting a Spring show to go with their car show and wondered if we would be interested in participating. She will let us know the dates and particulars later.

Tonya showed Blocks she started when she was 11 years old. She found them while unpacking.

Tonya also showed a 9-Patch Tinkerbell Quilt she made for her Daughter.

JoAnne showed a Quilt she made for her Granddaughter. She did the machine quilting.

Brenda made two matching Baby Quilts as Jim's Nephew and his wife had twins: Mary and Lillian. She machine quilted the seams and hand quilted the hearts. She used the 10-Minute Block.

Mary Ann showed her Christmas Tree, made using 9-Patch Blocks from the Karen Combs Class.

Lawana showed her Quilt that she made in the Karen Combs Class.

Lawana also showed her Delta Mystery Quilt, which Colleen Quilted for her.

Gwen made this Quilt. It was Machine Quilted by Watana. This was Gwen's first opportunity to see the finished product, It is not paper pieced.

Linda D showed her Alabama Roll Tide Quilt, quilted by Watana.

Betty showed a Quilt that her friend's husband's Mother or Grandmother had hand pieced. She is looking for someone who can quilt it, preferably before Christmas.

Judy showed 2 Quilts she made from her Houston Classes. The first is "Black & White & Stars All Over". Debbie Caffrey will be teaching this call at Mountain Quilt Fest next March.

Her 2nd Quilt is one of her Delta Mysteries that she used in the "Borders & Beyond" Class - extending her Shoo Fly Blocks into the border and using cream to continue her sashing.

Linda B showed her Fall Maple Leaf Table Runner. It will be done for Thanksgiving. sorry - no photo

Carol showed us the Challenge Quilt top. The theme is "Birds at Home". Watana will quilt it for us.

Colleen showed a Quilt that she will give to either her Daughter or Daughter-In-Law.

Julia showed her new Quilt from an "Old Favorite Contest". She used the Basket Block. She has titled it "Pharoah's Tomb. It has been accepted as a finalist. This is the 7th Year she has been a finalist. It will be displayed at the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, KY and will then travel for 2 years to AQS Shows. sorry - no photo

Julia also showed a Quilt she made using a "Modern Quilt Guild" pattern. There are many partial seams. She will add either a Navy or Teal Border and tie it with a Grey Yarn. This Quilt will be a Charity Quilt.

Julia also showed a Quilt made using scraps. This is a project within her Sewing Circle. She sorted her scraps into Lights, Mediums, and Darks. She used 3" Squares. The squares were sewn in rows. This will also be a Charity Quilt.

Linda D showed a Color Circle her Granddaughter had made for her. Her Granddaughter is in the 8th Grade.

Judy read the September Meeting Minutes. They were approved as read.

Donna is taking minutes in Terry's absence today.

The last Habitat House dedication has been delayed. Judy will e-mail the Guild when the dedication date is set. She has the Quilt, for when we need it. Ebba has the directions to the house.

Lauren donated backing material she found while cleaning her closet. She also had additional items that were happily passed onto other members.

Scrapbook - Linda D
Linda presented the Scrapbook and asked for suggestions to improve its presentation and assistance to identify several documents. Colleen has a 20 page expandable Scrapbook she will donate.

Lowndes County Library Christmas Tree
Judy asked for volunteers to decorate a tree at the library. The Library provides the tree, while the Guild provides the ornaments. This year's theme is "Polar Express". Sandi, Betty, and Victoria volunteered to decorate the tree (between Mon Nov 21 and Nov 30); Brenda and Lawana volunteered to undecorate the tree (between Jan 3 & 7). The Library is also requesting donations of homemade ornaments to decorate their main tree.

JoAnne demo'd the making of a "Mexican Star Basket". Directions were also provided to everyone.
Jo Anne also told us about http://www.timetoquilt.com/ - they have a boot to use when binding corners to miter them.

Tickets for the Karen Combs workshop are still on sale for $10

Lawana is the substitute treasurer today. There will be no report.

Karen Combs – Sandi and Brenda have volunteered to be holders and folders. With Mary Ann’s help. Sales help will be needed. Set up will be Watana, Sandi, Christine, Lawana and MaryAnn. Bring power strips and extension cords. Food: Carla will be in charge. Check your email, she will be contacting you for your order. If you would like to bring your machine Friday you may bring your things and set up for the meeting.

MQA meeting. Those who want to car pool meet at Lowes at 3 PM on Friday and be ready to pull out of the parking lot at 7:45 AM on Saturday. You need to pay $5 to come on Saturday, plus cost of meal. Registration needs to be sent in today!!! MQA Guild membership is $15 per year. Friday night is free (except for the meal). Memorial Hall, MSU. We will take turns sitting with the raffle quilt and selling lecture tickets.

Mountain Quiltfest is March 14-18 in Pigeon Forge Tennessee.

Challenge block theme was birds at home. The committee announced the winner. Annette made the winner ribbons. They are beautiful. Julia Graber won third place, second place is block number 7, Brenda Crownover, and drum roll…first place was block number 17, Sue Skipper. Viewers choice is block number 2, Annette Pennington.

A Quilt exhibit is being planned at the Agricultural and Forestry Museum. Nine patch is the theme. Forms are available. It will hang in the museum from January to May of 2012.

Judy announced that the Jackson quilt show is tomorrow at the Mississippi Craft Center off the Natchez Trace in Ridgeland.

ConKerr Cancer Pillowcase Drive Columbus, MS

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2011

A bunch of "happy campers" from PTQ met at the country home of Walter & Annette Pennington for a full blown"HOT DOG PARTY". Machines were humming like a swarm of bees. With the rolling, sewing,serging, turning, and pressing, those "Hot Dog Pillowcases" in some of the most beautiful fabrics you can imagine were being completed as we visualized the patients' smiles when they receive them as a gift. By the time all of them are turned in, we will have made over 100 ! How 'bout that ?

Of course we had to stop our activity long enough to enjoy the best ever lunch of cold drinks,hot dogs with chile & cheese and Jo Anne's special relish we all liked, potato chips,a delicious trifle by Linda Baines, & sooooo goooood cookies by Sue Skipper.

It was a wonderful day enjoyed by all. Special thanks to Walter & John for their help.

August 2011 Show at the Arts Center

If you are in the Columbus Area it is worth going by the Rosenzweig Arts Center at 501 Main Street to see the 2011 show. It will hang till around the end of the month when we will take it down. The Arts Center is closed on Sundays and Mondays. The hours are 9 am to 5 pm Tuesday through Saturday. Not only are there quilts, but other needle arts, like bowls, blankets, doilies, hats, layettes, etc.

Meeting was called to order by Julia Graber.

Linda’s sister, Loretta Sykes, from Montgomery visited.

Show and Tell

Lawana showed her strip quilt

This was made from the blue and white strips the guild gave her. We are anxious to see what the red and white strips will bring.

JoAnne showed her mystery quilt tops.

Christine showed a tube quilt charity quilt that Sue Skipper, Linda Baines and Carol James.

Watana show a Stack of Posie quilt made for her son in law’s birthday called Max’s Sunday Quilt.

Annette showed her Reflecting of Flowers quilt.

Colleen showed two quilts, The Witch is In and a 1600 quilt. The 1600 quilt was made in 4 hours including the border. It is called 1600 as it has 1600 inches of strips.

Watana showed a quilt that she quilted for an art patron.

Mary Ann showed a sunflower pattern (or wagon wheel or Dresden plate). Her mother pieced it when she was pregnant with her. So she has been involved with quilting since before she was born!

Carla showed a quilt top her daughter made using a 10 minute block.

Judy showed two mystery tops and one back.

Notice the secondary pattern she made by adding the sashing and stones.

Sandi showed a tossed nine patch that boys and girls club kids made and she quilted. It will be raffled.

And a collection of the mystery quilts revealed.

Business

Minutes were read and accepted with amendments.

Today is NOT the deadline on the challenge block to be in the quilt. If you still have yours, please bring it to the 17^th of September meeting. We really want your block!!!

Barbara gave a treasurer report and as of August 20, 2011 this was our status:

The first weekend workshop in Sept. is cancelled due to the Labor Day Holiday.

Tickets are ready to be picked up and sold for the opportunity quilt. Drawing is to be held at the November meeting.

Bring any articles for the scrapbook. If you have photos you would like to have included please print them off and bring them to the October meeting.

Judy shared that we can sell tickets at the Fall Gathering. It is Sept. 30 and Oct 1. She will be asking for volunteers to sit with the quilt and sell tickets during the gathering. It is at the Memorial Hall building on MSU. It is going to start at 4:00. Registration is coming out on common thread. McAllister’s is doing the food for both Friday and Saturday. There will be mini demos called School House Projects and registration starting at 4 pm on Friday. The meeting starts at 6. Goodie bags alone make it well worth coming.

The motion is to accept the arts guild proposal to have a show in July. The guild is requesting specifications on what can be shown and size restrictions.

Karen Combs workshop discussion on what to do about lunch. We voted to order lunch with the option to bring lunch if you do not want to order it.

Watana talked about the Name that Tune Block. Make sure to use black in the quilt, but not for the back ground. You may use part of the name, but not all of it. Use good judgment on your embellishments, remembering it must be quilted. The block is to be 15 inches trimmed to 14.5 inches.

Start thinking about the location of the Christmas party.

Barbara reminded us to get tickets for the Karen Combs lecture. They are $10.

Jennifer has the program on Miles of Pillowcase Smiles. This program, gives cheerful pillowcases to cancer patients. She asked if the guild would be a sponsor being part of this for September. The goal is a mile of cases in one month. Terry proposed we schedule a workshop on September 10 to make pillowcases. We will see if the arts center is available.

Mary Ann also did a demo on a quick block from the November/December issue of the Quiltmaker Magazine. Thanks Mary Ann...wish I had remembered the video camera.

Nominating Committee will be formed next meeting. Judy proposed that the new slate of officers be proposed in the November 19 meeting. Motion passed.

Habitat House Donation August 12, 2011

Hey all,

Judy, CC and JoAnne took the latest Habitat for Humanity quilt to the dedication. Here are a few photos from the day. This quilt was tied. It was made with red, white and blue card trick blocks. This house was built by the Heritage Academy team, so the red, white and blue, there school colors, was particularly appropriate. Makes me realize God's guidance in even the little minor things in our lives.

Opportunity Quilt - State Fair Sampler Quilt

Hey all,
Wanted to post some pictures of our 2011 Opportunity Quilt. We will be asking for donations for opportunities to win this quilt. This quilt was made from the State Fair Sampler pattern. This pattern is based on the second prize winner in the Ohio State Fair in the early 1900's. It is a mixture of foundation piecing and applique blocks. The border is a pieced border. One of our founding members, Sharon Hedrick purchased the fabric three years ago at the AQS show in Paducah, KY. Sharon then took time to put the fabric for each block into a packet. That took some time to get done...Then members signed up for some one or two (or more) packets. During our recent Charity week we finished putting the blocks together and made the border. The next week it was delivered to Coleen Eskridge, one of our members who spent three days quilting it on her long arm quilter. On Saturday a group of ladies sewed the binding and hanging sleeve on the quilt...So it is ready for the quilt show. The opening reception will be Thursday at 5:30 at the RAC. Come see this quilt and many others our members have made.

The meeting was called to order at 9:35, July 16th by Vice President, Watana Cantrell, with 23 present.

Minutes of last month's meeting was read by Annette Pennington and was approved as read.

Jennifer Haggard took pictures for us today to be posted on our site.

Ms Katy O'Possum was present decked out with her pink bow to welcome our visitors Mary Vlach & Gloria Kiser from Starkville. Valerie was here with her Mother, Mary Ann.

Thanks was given for all the work accomplished on the charity quilts last week. The raffle quilt is ready to be quilted.

Today was the deadline to turn in challenge blocks to be judged. We had 19 turned in today. Others will be accepted to go into the quilt until August 20, our next meeting.

Orders are still open for t-shirts. Call Judy Stokes if you want one.

Sign up sheets were given out to list items to be displayed in the quilt show upstairs in August. Hanging of the items to be shown will be August 1st. Plan to be there at 9:00 a.m.T-pins good to bring. Bring a 3 x 5 card for each quilt or item with the information on it written in dark pen or marker.

PROGRAM..........................Linda Dawkins did a demo on the X Block. Several quilts made with this block was shown by Linda, Colleen,& Mary. Discussion on our guild doing this class will be brought up at the next meeting.

MYSTERY QUILT................Last clues were handed out by Watana and she made a suggestion for the next project to make blocks to depict a song. She will have a list of songs to choose from at the next meeting. The group really liked this idea. Background will not be allowed to be black, but you will have to have some black in your block. The list of songs will be posted at the RAC for the next meeting. When you arrive, line up and put your name by a song to reserve that title for you. You will not use that title on your block, but will put your name on your block. So be on time to get more choices. These block will be turned into a guild quilt. There will not be judging so have fun and do your best.

Colleen showed the articles and book her daughter in law had published.

Sandi said she would make copies of the supply list for the Karen Combs' workshop and have them ready for the next meeting..

2011 Challenge Quilt Blocks

Hey all,

I am going to split this months meeting into two posts since there are so many pictures. So this is the post on the challenge blocks that were turned in by the dead line. There were 19. If you still have your block, please turn it in by the August meeting as that is the hard deadline to be included in the quilt. We really want your block!!

Top Ten Reasons to Go To a Major Quilt Show

10) Visit a neat city.
This year one of the AQS shows was in Knoxville, TN. Knoxville is a beautiful city and the convention center was great facility for a show and was attached to the World's Fair Park. Free to go to the top of the tower to see the views.

Loved the exterior of the art museum....wish I had had more time to visit it too.

On the road between Knoxville and Merryville (the home of Pappy's Quilt Place) we saw this cool sculpture.

Next year's AQS shows are in Lancaster, PA (March 14-17), Paducah, KY (April 25-28), Grand Rapids, MI (August 22-25) and Des Moines, Iowa (October 3-6).

9) Shop in the Vendor Mall. There are always new tools and interesting things to see in the vendor mall. Also new fabric lines that are cool to see and buy.

8) There are classes to take. They run the gambit from hand piecing to long arm quilting and at this show, sewing machines are provided in all the classes, so you do not have to haul yours.

7) There are lots of lectures and trunk show. These run from fun to serious. Went to one with a scavenger hunt in your purse, to discussions on design. I would post pictures of quilts I saw here, but I didn't get the permission to publish them, so I am not putting them up.

6) Eat at cool places. Knoxville has a number of non-chain restaurants. We ate at a saloon one day, a neat sandwich shop and a pizza place. Then we went to the Melting Pot, a fondue place, the last night, as we have never been to one, and it was fun.

5) View quilt show. This is so inspiring. It gives you tons of ideas of things you will want to make and ideas of things our guild can do. Here is a link to some shots of the show http://www.quiltviews.com/views-from-the-knoxville-aqs-quilt-show

4) Get inspired to try new things. I know this is a growth of #5 but it is so important that it needs it's own number.

3) Meet icons of the quilt world and get to pick their brains. Billie Lauder, Barbara Cline, Karen Stone, Karla Alexander and Cindy Blackburg are just a few of the leaders we met.

2) Words of Wisdom from teachers.
Here are a few quotes from a Karen Stone lecture.

Member Spotlight - Judy Stokes

Judy is one of our charter members and this year celebrated her 60th birthday by making each of her children a quilt.

This first quilt is a Turning Twenty quilt for her daughter Laurie.

The Ohio star is for Leslie.

The Quick Trips is for Clint.

The Black and Tan Lotto Block Quilt is for Jennifer.

Roll, Roll, Cotton Boll Mystery Quilt (Bonnie Hunter pattern) is for Molly.

Not only is she talented quilter she is a wonderful person, and a natural teacher. She has helped us grow as a group and has shared her talents with us. For that Judy we thank you!!

Charity Quilt Week

Hey all,

The arts center was available this week so we scheduled a charity quilt work week. I personally hope this becomes an annual event. We also finished the quilt top for the raffle quilt. It will be available to see at the meeting next Saturday. Speaking of our meeting next week a number of us are out of town, so if you are available we really need you to come out and represent (in the vernacular of my students).

The first charity quilt completed was the churn dash quilt...

Next the patriotic quilt made of card trick blocks...

we finished tying it, so it is ready for binding. It needs to be finished for the next habitat home, in August.

Then Watana and Lory got cranking and whipped out a ten minute block quilt.

Terry went home and found a good piece for the backing...

Meanwhile using the left over patriotic card trick blocks, JoAnne and CC led a group in doing a small lap quilt....which I apparently missed getting a picture of it.

Then Lory and Watana started another 10 minute block quilt using vibrant colors. Several others joined in and helped on this...

Backing, batting and binding are ready for assembly.

Lawana was leading a group that was using the donated baby clothes to do a tossed nine patch...it is about half done. Again your trusty blogger missed a picture.

Carol and Ebba consulting on the tossed 9 patch.

Margie led the group that was hand quilting the sampler quilt.

But the main goal was to finish the raffle quilt top...here are some close ups of some sections of the quilt. Judy, MaryAnne, Brenda, Sandi and others worked on this...

Meeting was called to order at 9:45 by acting chairman Barbara Walker with 18 present with 1 visitor Bobbie Hommel who very recently moved to Columbus from Nevada. She was a charter member of her guild there and we look forward to seeing some of the pretty things she has made.

Member Spotlight - Annette Pennington

Hey all,

Thought it might be time to showcase some of our members work. We have so much talent in this group, so who to start with? The choice seemed obvious after Annette's wonderful presentation at our last meeting.

Annette is a retired hairdresser/business owner and she brings the creativity and organizational skills that career demands to her quilting.

Annette hosted our Christmas Party last December and showed a number of beautiful quilts in a bed turning.

Annette shows her creativity in a number of ways. Here are some other examples of her wonderful work.

April Meeting Minutes

We have 2 new members Victoria Meehan and Colleen Eskridge . Lawana’s daughter, who is passing through in the middle of a move, also visited with us.

Show and Tell

Julia’s student’s art class project.

Terry showed her twisted bargello and her shoefly quilt. She also showed her latest tube quilt.

Carla showed her stack and whack. We loved the khaki background.

Watana showed a scrap quit she made from garage sale fabrics. The pattern is called scrappy trails.

Victoria showed a table runner.

She sent pictures of her split rail fence too!

Jennifer showed a plaid project and her first finished top.

Congratulations. Loved her color choices.

Lori showed her first quilt. She is hand quilting it.

Linda Dawkins showed her soduku quilt.

Minutes read and approved.

Judy gave a wrap up on the pilgrimage. She said we started at White Arches and quilted at each of the other houses. They got about half the quilt quilted. The quilt got rave reviews.

Habitat house will be done in June.

Terry told about the guidelines for the Karen Combs workshop and lecture.

Julia passed out guidelines for our quilt show in August.

Hang quilts Tuesday, August 2 with reception August 4

Quilts must be in clean condition.

Labels need to be on all items.

No king size quilts will be hung.

In the event of excessive quilts we will limit the number per person.

Small items are welcome. Any needle arts.

All new items, no shown items from last year.

Plan to hang your own quilts or make arrangements for someone else to hang them.

After the meeting some of the ladies that were not making rope bowls quilted on our habitat quilt.

Watana gave an update on the mystery quilt...some are starting to figure out the mystery. The rest of us better put our thinking caps on.

Judy and Brenda showed a Bonnie Hunter Mystery Quilts. Called Roll, Roll Cotton Boll. They started in November and are done.

RSVP Quilt – Lawana made the blocks and Judy assembled. They used baby clothes that had been cut up.

Brenda showed a small item that she made to hang over the arm of her chair.

Judy showed four blocks that she made at a Bonnie Hunter workshop at Pigeon Forge. It combines two blocks, Jacobs Ladder and a star block

Judy also showed some hand pieced Apple Core pieces. Cindy Blackburg makes the stamps for the pattern.

Ebba showed what she learned from a class called rediscovered log cabin.

She also showed her results from a tube quilt class. Also 9 patch shuffle. It was really pretty.

Linda showed Marty Michelle Jamestown Sampler.

Terry showed her twisted Barjello quilt and her shoefly quilt tops. Watana will be quilting them.

Julia showed a number of items from her family quilting retreat.

Using 10 inch blocks, 4 darks and one light. Fold light in half, wrong sides together.

Treasurey report . Two deposits dues and cash on hand. $300.00 from Exchange club and another $4020.32 and $1800 in the education fund.

Minutes were read and amended.

Ballots were then passed out for the various Karen Combs workshops. Discussion on various workshops. Overwhelming majority for Combing through your scraps.

Charity quilts, if you are on the committee maybe you could spear head a quilt so it would be ready to go when we get to that part of the meeting.

Discussion on reconsidering whether to get Bonnie Hunter. We voted to reconsider and possibly get someone else. The committee will research and bring a recommendation.

The relay for life quilt can no longer be hung in the store. Tickets only from associates. Next year Watana suggest we produce a relay for life quilt for Lowndes County or Columbus.

Raffle quilt will be worked on this afternoon.

Pilgrimage Lauren brought brochures. Brenda Is donating a top.

It will go to the next Habitat home. See Judy about quilting during the pilgrimage or artisan Saturday.

Historical – If you have pictures or articles get them to Linda Dawkins

Challenge committee – need binding on two blocks for next week.

There will be viewers choice next year with a monetary reward. First, Second, and Third will be awarded by secret ballot vote by members. Cost is $6, to cover the costs of batting and backing. Viewers choice is $40, First is $40, Second is $30, Third is $20. Discussion on comments. The theme is birds at home. Deadline is July 16. If you are late you are not eligible to win the prize money. You may add as many colors as you would like. Prewashed 100% cotton fabric. 15 inch unfinished. We are going to use 14 inch finished so be sure your design fits in that space.

Delta mystery next update will be done. Request was made that speedy folks avoid posting pictures or showing their tops till the final month to avoid spoiling the mystery for those who are not able to work ahead.

Sharon Lofton showed several quilts. The first was a bargello.

Next she showed a trip around the world.

Then she showed an adaption of a pattern she saw in a quilt magazine.

Finally she showed a fussy cut wild animal quilt.

The exchange club quilt was shown too.

Before the binding was hand stitched down.

and the back -- it is hard to see the quilting in the photo, but Watana did a great job.

The extra blocks were put in a strip on the back of the quilt.

Then Annette showed some Karen Combs graduated fabric she bought at Heritage quilt shop in Tupelo. It is also available at Karencombs.com. Everyone needs to visit the website and look at the classes that are available. We will vote on what we would like to take at our next meeting.

She then showed her quilt as you go string quilt. She made it with the left overs from the sister’s quilts.

Watana showed her Fighting Day and Night quilt that she made for the Lamar County Relay for Life Rally. Contact her if you would like tickets. They are $1 a chance.

Mary Ann presented Sharon with a hand painted and quilted wall quilt of our emblem. Good Job Mary Ann and THANK YOU Sharon for all your hard work.

Minutes were read. Accepted.

Treasury report 390.00 dues paid $190.00 expenses giving a balance of $4,113.74. $1880 is designated for education.

If you dues are not paid they need to be paid at this time.

We have 28 paid members at the time. Report was unanimously accepted.

Sandi had the program. She showed a big bag she had made. She said she would have the pattern next time. You can line it and add pockets in the lining.

She also demo’d a ruler she used to work on the mystery quilt.

Karen Combs workshop will be October 15, we will not open to other guilds. We have decided to try to book Bonnie Hunter in 2013.

MUW wants us to teach beginning quilting MUW on Monday-Thursday and Saturday morning Sept. 19 – Oct 31. Need answer by Feb 28. Contact 662-327-0043 Cathy Howell. Annette made the motion that we do not take it as a guild and make it for individual work only.

Aliceville Middle School was asking for us to teach grades 7-8…but they dropped that from the program.

MUW theatre group is coming after lunch to observe us. They would like to have some quilts to display Feb 24-27. They are putting on a show about quilters.

Old Business: T-shirts, when Joanne gets back we will check in with her.

Quilt in a day has a Triangle square up ruler. Mississippi is the promotional code. sp;

Challenge Quilt Committee: Discussion on the floor of the suggestions Julia made in her email. She suggested nominating a new committee and continuing on as we have or we could make a quilt to donate to the arts center or we could take another suggestion from the floor. Contest could have categories.

Committee was formed Annette Pennington, Jennifer Haggard, Carol James, Linda Baines and Sharon Loften volunteered.

Pilgrimage: Brenda Crownover brought forms with schedules. Please fill out and let us know when you can come quilt.

One of our projects is to organize the fabric donated to our group. It had been stored in bags in a storage room, and some in the bottom of another cabinet. Our group purchased one of those portable storage closets for our fabric and first we just got it in there...and it looked like this.
So using a folding technique that one of our members knew...

We added painters tape with notes on how many yards for the larger pieces. Painters tape does not leave residue behind.

Other members worked on the quilt for the Exchange club and the one for Wal-Mart to raffle for the Relay for Life fund drive. Some Basket of Flower blocks that we decided would be better for wall hanging were worked on too. I missed the end so I did not see the results of the days work.

Meeting Minutes

Visitors present: Tanya Stewart, Regina DeMint, Twyla Summerford, Jennifer Haggard, Pattie Straton, and Cindy Waites. Thanks for joining us.

Show and Tell

Annette showed a small tube quilt made from some curtain material. She wanted to try out the technique.
She then read us a poem she wrote about our mystery quilt. It was very funny.

Pattie Straton showed two quilts tops she had made.

Challenge quilt was showed. Just lack putting the binding on. That was done in the afternoon.

Terry showed a quilt she called "Dreaming Under the Stars" made for her son. Sharon quilted it for her.

Judy showed quilts made from Pidgon Forge fabrics with the category memories. Julia and Judy are both competing.

Judy showed her black and tan quilt blocks quilt top.

Julia was a finalist, in the new quilts from an old favorite.

Sharon Lofton showed a quilt as you go string quilt.


This is a two sided quilt.

Christine demo’ed how to do a scrap quilt.

Judy showed her completed UFO from last year and showed her goal piece for this year.

RAC Quilt show in August. So plan to do some smaller projects to show and sell. Fiber art is acceptable. We have to have 75% of what is shown for sale.

Be sure to see the show upstairs. Lisa Stamps made the ones on display. They are mostly from Gordo.

Karen Combs is coming October 15. Would the guild have enough to book Bonnie Hunter in 2013.

Deborah who repaired sewing machines out of the pawn shop is no longer picking up machines there.

Charity quilts: We are working this afternoon. If you have not brought your exchange club block back please bring it at the workshop as we need it. If you cannot do it by then please let one of the committee members know. If you are working on Charity Quilts for Parchment inmates, get them to Mary Ann Abrams.

Pilgrimage: We are welcome. It is time for us to decide who is available for quilting. We can hang a quilt to raffle off.

Treasurer: $3823.74 total with $1880 of that in the educational funds.

Internet: We will no longer be using the Yahoo! Group site. We will use email and the blog to stay in touch. Therefore it is very important that everyone add the members email addresses to their email address book. Otherwise when you are sent an email addressed to the group, it will, most likely go to the spam folder. We have signed up for a you-tube channel. That is where our video’s will be posted. (Thanks Dad for the new toy!)

Historical committee: We are looking for a replacement for Sharon Hedrick as she is moving to Germany.

Christine demo’ed a scrap quilt that she read about in the new Quiltmaker magazine.

We have had a number of exciting things happening this coming year and a number of things that I have read about on the 'net that I felt like I would put out a quick update blog for us.

First off we are excited to announce that we have gotten an agreement with Karen Combs to come to do a one day seminar at our guild on Saturday, October 15. Here is a link to her blog http://www.karencombs.com/.

December Minutes - Sort of

Hey all,

I really didn’t think we were going to have a meeting – thought it would be more of a party and show and tell, so I did not bring pencil, paper, or my favorite, the lap top…so I am doing the minutes from memory…which these days is like a sieve so forgive any omissions and oversights. I will be prepared in January.

First I know we would all like to thank Annette for hosting the Christmas party. We enjoyed seeing her home, it truly reflects her creativity. We also enjoyed the quilt turning.

We started the meeting with show and tell.

Mary Ann showed a table runner made with the tube quilt technique.

Watana showed a t-shirt quilt made for her daughter’s beau.

Watana also showed a Christmas quilt made with a Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt.

CC showed her block of the month quilt.

Sandi and the charity group gave a presentation on the block for the exchange club quilt.

Sandi also helped Sharon Lofton with her block of the month presentation.

JoAnn then turned the meeting over to the new president, Julia Graber.

Julia led with a discussion of goals for our guild. Two of the goals are to line up a nationally known teacher and to make the meetings more productive, by having projects set up and ready to go as soon as the meeting is adjourned. A lively discussion was held on the subject of a nationally known teacher and it was decided to form a committee. The committee will research various teachers, topics of learning, availability and costs and bring a recommendation to the guild. I am sure that all the committee members; Watana, Sandi, and Mary Ann , would like to hear from you on suggestions and teachers that you would like to have come to Columbus.

It was also requested that we do some lessons or workshops for beginning quilters. Judy has agreed to give a short beginner lesson.
Judy announced that she will be running for president elect of MQA in the next state election. Congratulations.

There will be no meeting on the first as the RAC will be closed for New Years day. Our next meeting will be January 15. We are planning to have a 5^th Saturday workshop on January 29 and another workshop day on February 5.

January is our month to pay dues. Dues are $15.00 a year. Please bring them to the January meeting.

Show and Tell

Annette showed a book she made at Heirlooms forever in Tupelo. It was fabulous…showed lots of techniques that give interesting effects with fabric. Annette donated a bunch (around 20) of extra teal and brown blocks to the guild for a charity quilt. Thanks Annette.

Christine Anderson showed her turning twenty quilt with embroidered blocks for the focus blocks. Lauren eat your heart out. :-)

Christine also showed another tube quilt. She did it from a tutorial on Missouri Quilt http://tutorials.missouriquiltco.com click on the tutorial tab at the top and look for the quilting tutorials….then look for the link Summer in the park. At this link there are lots of videos. If you click on the view all videos the first video in that link is the tube quilt that she showed last month. She did twelve blocks for her brown quilt.

Brenda is finishing her old quilts from the 90’s. It was around robin quilt. Good job on those UFO's!

Terry showed her CHS Quilt top of T-shirt quilt that will be raffled to benefit the IB program.

JoAnne showed her spinning stars quilt that she learned from Barbara Cline. Complete!!!

Business

No meeting on the third Saturday.

The expenses for the DeKalb trip should be included in the expenses of the Charity quilt.

Annette said that the blades from the shop in Tupelo did not fit well in the larger cutter, but did well in her Martelli.

Annette said that she would host the Christmas party. She asked to have a committee formed to help organize the party. JoAnne is chairing the committee with Carla, CC, and Lawana.

Annette said to get to her place turn off of 82 onto 69 South. Turn on Lake Lowndes road. She is one mile from the slip and dip at 1411 Lake Lowndes Road. We will start at 11 and stay till Walter runs us off…(kidding Walter!) Saturday the fourth of December. Bring a dirty Santa gift Price limit is $15.00 - $20.00 and sign up for a dish to share. Visitors are invited to attend.

Habitat quilt: They are behind schedule so that gives us some breathing room.

T-Shirts: Sam Jacobs said they could do long sleeve shirts for ~$12 , or short sleeve for ~$9. Larger sizes add a dollar.

Mary Ann suggested that we make an absentee block box to drop off blocks. Mary Ann suggested that we bring blocks that are done as make up blocks and leave in cabinet. Passed.

Watana is suggesting we do a mystery quilt instead of a challenge block for the coming year. Donna proposed we take her suggestion. Seconded by Mary Anne. Voted and passed. Please bring your accomplishments each month to the meetings.

Challenge Quilt Committee: We are going to work on the charity quilt

Charity quilts: Parchment would want 12 twin sized quilts for the Alzheimer inmates. So the charity committee will work on it. Motion was made that it be worked on an individual basis. Sharon seconded. Passed. Twin sized is about 65 by 80.

Block of the Month

Blocks for Julia and one more for Ebba!

Donna wants you to make a 15.5 unfinished block with the pattern provided using the background fabric provided add an intense fabric color that reads as a solid.

Recipe
Several members asked for Sandi's soup recipe so here it is...

Creamed Cabbage Soup
2 cans chicken broth (14 1/2 oz)
2 ribs celery, chopped
1 med. head cabbage, shredded
1 med. onion, chopped
1 or 2 carrots, chopped
1/4 c. butter or margarine
3 Tablespoon flour
3 c. half and half, or milk
2 c. cubed, fully cooked ham
1/2 teaspoon thyme
1/2 teaspoon dried parsley (optional, i like fresh better)

   In a large soup pot combine broth, celery, onion and carrot. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 15-20 min or until veggies are tender. (The recipe says to put the cabbage in with veggies but i wait til veggies are almost done, then add cabbage)
   Meanwhile, melt butter in saucepan, add flour, salt and pepper, mix well and cook 1 min.
Add half and half gradually stirring constantly. Cook and stir til thick. Add to veggies, stirring constantly. Add ham, thyme and parsley, heat through.   (You may have to add more milk, sometimes gets to thick)

Judy’s car is full for the Hattiesburg Quilt show on Saturday but JoAnne is going Sunday.

Carla shared that November 19 the Annunciation Catholic School is having an artisan fair. If anyone would like to help her she needs volunteers.

Watana made a motion that a member making trips specifically for the guilds business be reimbursed for the mileage. It was seconded and passed.

Sharon shared that a nurse at parchment wondered if we would be willing to make quilts for Alzheimers patients at parchments. There are about 12 of them. The charity committee will meet and make a recommendation.

Historical committee: We will want to address the things.

Raffle quilt: Blocks are available for pick up today.

Hancocks has patterns on sale.

November calendar. Guild meeting will be on November 6.

Will there be another t-shirt order? We will check on prices and let you know. A majority would be interested in ordering another shirt.

Annette said Harbor freight tool company would be a good source of rotary blades on Main Street in Tupelo.

Linda Baines shared that there is a quilt show in Batesville and tomorrow is the last day.

Sandi wants to sell her mid arm and frame. She is asking $1000. She will tell good and bad about it. Contact her for specific information.

Nominating Committee: The nominating committee presented the following slate of officers to the membership for a vote: President: Julia Graber, Vice President: Watana Cantrell, Secretary: Terry Turnage, Treasurer: Barbara Walker. There were no nominees from the floor. The proposed slate was voted in.

Charity quilts: Had a successful shopping trip in DeKalb. Sandi showed the samples. Sandi showed the fabric that they had chosen. She said we are going to the crown of thorns block that we did for Watana. The directions can be found at Blockcentral.com block of the month 2008 March.

Pilgrimage: This is a good time to decide what to wear for pilgrimage. You may want to make a dress and it takes time. There is a simple method using 3 yards of fabric to make a skirt and add a old style blouse.

Hey Possum Town Quilters, I got a call from Pat Hickey asking if we would do a post promoting their quilt show...thought I would help while watching the football game. .... so I combined her emails and am adding her pics...

Hi,

Here are a couple of the pictures I hope you will enjoy seeing. They are of a couple of the sections already complete (maybe) as of last Wednesday at our upcoming quilt show that I was telling you about. One has a fall/autumn theme. One has a patriotic theme. I figure the 2nd one will have more in it than is now visible in the picture by showtime.

Our group has been quilting together since about 1992. We are very informal. We just meet each Thursday and quilt on one of our own quilts. We draw names to see in what order we will get our quilts done. Sometimes we bring our lunch and sometimes a couple will bring lunch for all. Basically we stay from about 9:30 AM to about 3 PM but few get there exactly on time.

There have been years when we draw names to make a block for someone like I think the PTQ is doing now. Anyway, we have a good time and we would love it if some or all of you could come up next weekend.

Bible characters and verses. Somebody found the squares in the trash recently and gave them to one of our quilters. She organized them into the design you see and had it quilted by someone with a quilting machine.

Actually, it may have been another in our group who organized them for Shirley, but the quilt belongs to Shirley.

Judy brought the habitat quilt, a tossed 9 patch in purples and blues. The dedication is tomorrow at 1:30. 1486 S. Pickensville Road. Turn right at Omnova, Nashville Ferry Road (or Yorkville Ferry Road). Turn left at the T. The house is on stilts.

Judy also has two slots for staying in her room for the MQA meeting in October.

Judy and Julia reported on the quilting retreat. While attendance was small the company was great and everyone got a lot done.

Do we want to think about if we want to keep a hard copy of the pictures and minutes since we have the blog? Discussion ensued. Point was brought out about news reports. Suggested that we keep photos of group projects. No decision was made.

Reminder that entries in the Lowndes County Fair must be brought Monday 9/20 between 3 and 6 by the person entering. Fair ends on Saturday.

Wantana is willing to teach how to make a tube quilt. Bring a square ruler and a triangle, all cutting supplies. Three colors of coordinating fabrics. Cut strips, so you need about a yard of each. She is going to do that on the Oct. 16 day.

Carolina Lily is moving to the coast, so she is only open the week of Oct 18. Quilting books are buy one get one free. The lady is willing to give us a discount if about 10 or 15 of us are planning to go. Please contact me by email if you are planning to go, so we can tell her if we have enough to get a discount.

Elba Kellum wants a block that looks like the various Halloween icons. For example a witch that looks like a witch, no stars or nine patches. Your block can be any size you want. I googled quilt blocks Halloween and found a number of things for inspiration. Some ideas could be cats, ghosts, pumpkins, witches, bats, haunted house, bare trees.

Julia Graber showed her quilt that is answering the challenge of a new play on an old theme.

Judy Stokes showed another grandson quilt, made with the turning twenty pattern, but with 12 blocks.

Wantana Cantrell showed her Alabama prototype quilt. She is planning to make a number of these for her children and family.

Annette Pennington showed a purse she had made by scanning the lace and printing the pattern on fabric. So cute.

Exchange club raffle quilt. Sent him a raffle estimate for $250. The theme is a children. Annette suggested using fabrics on hand if possible.

Quilt show in Columbia – Carrie Whitehead of Stitches of Love sent an email asking us to participate in their quilt event. They would like to display quilts for display or for sale. Spots are also available for vendors. I copied the following information from the internet for your convenience.

BAWI Fest - November 5-7, 2010
Join the festivities as we celebrate B.A.W.I. FEST featuring "Quilting on the Pearl" in downtown Columbia, MS, November 5-7. We will recognize Governor Hugh White's historic plan "Balancing Agriculture with Industry (B.A.W.I.) from the mid 20th century with events centered on quilting and outdoor sporting. The festival will kick off Friday night with an evening gala and will conclude on Sunday afternoon with a production of "The Nutcracker."
The festivities on Saturday will include art and sporting booths and children's activities; The Quilt Korner will offer demonstrations, exhibits including antique quilts, Merchant's Mall, quilt raffle, door prizes, and much more. The heart of the event will be the display of beautiful quilts from across the region as they line our Main Street storefronts. According to the bylaws it is time to set up a nominating committee. Carla Formel, Sue Skipper, & Sandi Bowen were asked to serve and agreed. At that point is was proposed by Sharon that we accept the nominations, seconded by Judy and approved by present members.

October being the fall gathering is the third gathering motion was made to swap the meeting and workshop days. Seconded and passed. October 2 will be the meeting and October 16 will be the workshop. MQA meeting is in Philadelphia October 15 & 16.

Three Sister's Quilts

Our Possum Town Quilter's recently took on the task of making 3 quilts from used clothing.

If I have the story right, three sisters lost their mother in an automobile accident; so their great aunt raised them. Now the great aunt passed away and these are her clothes. Another relative ask us to make a quilt for each of the young girls using the great aunt's clothes.

We cut up blouses, skirts, dresses, and house coats. Using the String Quilt idea we made this one using blacks & whites & reds with the yellow down the center of each block.

We used the "Stack A Posie" idea to make this next quilt.

And then we used the "Tossed Nine Patch" idea for the third quilt.

This is the back to the "Tossed Nine Patch."

Show and Tell:

· Donna showed her t-shirts that she plans to make into a quilt.

· Watana showed her Bargello Quilt. It has 8 different fabrics. You quilt is as you piece it.

· Judy showed her Lemoyn Star that she learned to make at the June Gathering Class. It is hand quilted. It will be for sale in the August Quilt Show.

· Linda D showed pillowcases she made to match quilts. They were embroidered with names.

June Minutes: Read by Donna and were approved as read.

August Quilt Show at RAC

• Charter Member Linda Goley was introduced as a “Visitor”; Welcome Back Linda
• Show & Tell –
• Carla presented Carla’s Kaleidoscope”; pattern found in a magazine; quilted by Sharon Hedrick; made for no one special – so it’s for her
• Suzy presented her Stack ‘n Whack from class, which she will use for a couch quilt
• Margie presented her Stack ‘n Whack, which she will use as a bed quilt
• Lawana presented her Stack ‘n Whack, which she will use as a wall hanging
• Watana presented “Circle of Life”, made from batiks
• Sharon Lofton presented her Stack ‘n Whack titled “College Band”, which she will give to her Granddaughter who will finish her last two years of music at MUW
• Judy presented a Disappearing Nine Patch which she will give to her Grandson Zeb; class from Bonnie Browning last year at the Alabama Quilt Symposium; backing is Hancock 50 cent / yard fabric
• Annette presented a Stack of Posies; tying the knots in the corners of each square; used thicker batting
• Watana presented her Stack ‘n Whack; border is the fabric for the spinners
• Both the Stack of Posies and the String Quilt for the Sisters are complete; the Tossed Nine Patch will be quilted by Sandi
• Judy told of teaching her three Granddaughters (ages 9, 9, and 7) to quilt

Program – Judy Stokes: Cheap Tricks
Use everyday items versus buying gadgets
• Use a pill bottle; drill small holes in the lid; use to pull threads from bobbins in the bottle
• Use a pill bottle with one small hole drilled in the lid to dispose of used needles (or use to keep your sewing needles)
• Chatelaine: Ribbon, straw, and 2 safety pins – holds thread around your neck
• Wooden Iron: one side of a clothespin; take the clothespin apart
• Sand Paper Dots to hold Ruler: Place double sided tape on the back of the sandpaper; make with a hole punch
• Iron material onto an old mousepad – good as new
• Metal Candy Tins – place double sided tape on a refrigerator magnet and place in tin – a great way to hold pins, bobbins, seam ripper, and machine feet

May Meeting

Before we cover the happenings at the meeting I wanted to share a little bit of the latest Habitat house. Sharon presented the quilt to the homeowner and she was so happy. On our way out, the owners of the habitat house with the 14 quilts shared how much those quilts had meant to their family. She said the oldest son teared up when she presented his patriotic quilt. She said the younger boys fight over whose quilt is whose...In addition, I wanted to share how wonderful the kids at Heritage were...they were all very pleasant and happy. It was wonderful to see a group of young people that happy. They also raised enough money to pay her first 6 months mortgage and electric bill. I found myself tearing up over the generosity of time and money.

May Meeting Minutes

Jo Anne opened the meeting. There were no visitors. Suzy Stanton renewed her membership. Welcome back!

Show and Tell

Carol James showed her first quilt…fabulous!

Susie Stanton showed an art quilt. This was made to pattern after a painting. She did a beautiful job. She was planning to quilt it this afternoon.

Sue Skipper showed a quilt for her grandson. Loved the colors and prairie points.

Linda Baines showed a quilt called Autumn Braid where she added some other fabrics too. Love those batiks.

Joanne brought a mystery quilt in black and white and her project from Paducah. Both were really neat.

Business

Sharon was going to do the report on Habitat for Humanity but Terry gave it in her absence.

Mary Ann’s mother is in bad shape and we are requesting prayer for her and her family.

Committee reports

Challenge packets are still available, only use light weight fusible, we have some available. Also remember that the block is to be straight set, NOT on point.

Charity quilts – Exchange club want us to make a decision to whether to donate a quilt…they said they would pay for one, but since it is for a charity group would like a discount. JoAnne then read a new letter from them. A discussion was held on different points of how it could be done, and whether to do it. Lawana made a motion that we take a vote whether or not to do the project. Lauren seconded. More discussion ensued. Motion passed. The committee will get some particulars together.

Carla shared a quote: During the Great Depression, quilting gave women a profound sense of accomplishment; of being able to piece something together when people’s lives were falling apart.

Lauren gave the treasurers report.

Challenge intake of $156, Dues of $75, Tshirt sale of $8 for total receipts of $239.00

Dispersements of $91.26 for fabric and supplies for use on sister’s quilts and RSVP machine.

Total cash on hand $3,435.24.

Retreat maybe possible at Julia’s inlaw’s home. It has 4 bedrooms and they are not staying there currently. Be watching for more definite information.

New business – the calendar for June was passed out. Important dates are listed below.

New habitat house has begun. We will plan a quilt.

Stack and whack class was discussed. Flower head pins needed. Fabric for spinners needs to have a large repeat and you need eight repeats. We will have supply list made up before the workshop.

Linda Baines shared she was having trouble reaching the blog. Terry suggested that when you get the link in the email that once you follow it and are at the blog click on the favorites button to add it to your favorites. That way you will be able to reach the block without having to go back to the email.

Block of the Month

Lawana wants us to make two strips in pink/reds and blues with the light she provided in the center. Please coordinate with the sample given.

Jo Anne’s block is going to be in blue and yellow…and she does not know the name of the block but I am sure it will be fun.

Jo Anne included all the fabric since she had a big collection already.

There is a correction to the packet that Jo Anne gave out at the meeting. On page 1 C & D are the same fabric as A. B and E are out of the same fabric. On page 2 from the strip that is to cut A, C and D pieces the bottom cut is 4 1/2 inches.

Chef on a Shoestring

Since June 5 is the MQA meeting and there is another quilt show in Tuscaloosa there will be no Chef on a shoestring at the workshop. If you are attending please plan to bring a sack lunch.

Show and Tell

Margie showed a pieced and appliquéd lap size quilt.

Great inspiration for the Challenge quilt!

Lawana showed one of the sisters quilts that has the borders on.

Julia showed her quilts “Autumn Tumble” and “North Wind Doth Blow”.

She also showed an antique quilt owned by Lee Sanders, that needs repairs. It is an antique puff biscuit quilt. He is offering around $500.00 for your services.

Judy showed a turning twenty quilt with farm pictures for her grandson and another Log cabin with Stars for another grandson.

Sharon shared that Mary Anne’s mother is ill, please pray.

Pilgrimage – Started quilting a quilt on the first day. It was finished on Saturday. We will bind it this afternoon.
Calendar for May was passed around.
Quilt show rules for August RAC Show were distributed. No King sized quilts. Try to keep them smaller than the panels and the director liked the small items. Put reasonable prices or not for sale. Patrons think the art center prices the items and feel like they are being taken advantage. Limit of 3 quilts per person. All new items, no items from last year. Quilted wall hangings are to have a hanging sleeve and a label. Label of some sort on all items. Need quilts July 30 and everyone needs to be here as early as possible that day.
Proposal to purchase a used sewing machine. $50.00. Motion made to buy and seconded.
On May 1, Sharon will be giving a seminar on appliqué. Bring some muslin, fabric, a needle you are comfortable with, a fine thread, such as silk, to work with and a marking pen. She will be showing several techniques.

Linda Baines Granny squares came out great!! I missed the picture of CC's stars in Navy...but they looked great!

Watana showed her demo block and it is called Crown of Thorns by “Somewhere in Time”, it is an 18” block and she is providing the outside border fabric. She wants the background fabric to be white on white (wow) and for the colors pick up colors in the batik provided. www.blockcentral.com/bom2008-3pfv.shtml

Sharon gave a demo on chain piecing her block it is a small block, 9 inches. She is providing the pink background, you are to use a medium to dark purple. Press to the dark fabric.
